Allusive and enigmatic

Shadow (2117-30) is a master of ambiance. It is a colour that calls to mind a "past", yet it can also make a contemporary, colour-confident statement. Shadow is sophisticated, provocative and poetic; it can bring energy to a space or harmony and a moment of respite.

- Ellen O'Neill, Creative Director, Benjamin Moore

We are excited to announce our highly anticipated Colour of the Year 2017 - Shadow 2117-30, a rich, royal amethyst, dripping in drama, alongside a versatile, jewel-toned palette of a further 22 deep, saturated hues and complementary neutrals.
Our expert Colour Studio forecasts colour trends after a year of research, attending major industry shows around the world, while also taking cues from standouts in architecture, fashion, textiles, home furnishings and the arts.

The Colour and Design team saw an acceleration of the trend away from neutrals and pales - with people who have felt "colour-deprived" wanting to bring more and more drama into their spaces through bolder colour.

Another evolving trend was the layering of textures and tactile materials - bringing visual dimension into a space. They were intrigued by the interplay of texture, colour and light, and how light can activate different shades in different ways by the hour.
A deep, muted, amethyst shade, Shadow is a colour that can be intense, invoking passion and energy yet can also be gentle, tempered in a softly lit room to reveal its grey undertones and create a calming and sophisticated backdrop.
Shadow can be used on all 4 walls to create a dramatic feel, but works equally as a feature colour over a mantel, with a neutral colour, such as Cloud Cover OC-25, on the other walls.

Our Colour Trends 2017 palette features 23 sophisticated hues ranging from muted pales to saturated deeps. In curating the palette, the Colour Studio lent significant consideration to the pairing of colours and relationships between colour families, as well as a newfound level of colour confidence in deeper hues among design professionals and consumers.
